After a number of years on regional news agencies and daily newspapers (as a general news reporter, feature writer and industrial correspondent), John was in at the birth of BBC local radio, and went on to spend 17 years as a journalist with the Corporation. During that period he worked as news and current affairs editor and deputy radio station manager, and ran the London based newsdesk servicing BBC stations across the UK. He helped to pioneer the radio phone-in, producing and presenting several hundred editions.

John left the BBC to become a director of a major regional news agency serving national newspapers and radio and TV channels, and to take charge of its newsdesk. As a freelance, he has covered major news and sports stories for a wide range of national daily and Sunday papers, and most recently, has been specialising in feature writing.

He is a media consultant to some of the biggest companies in the UK and has helped consortia to apply successfully for new radio station licences. He has more than ten years' experience in newspaper, radio and television training both in the UK and abroad for a wide range of companies, national and local government departments and charities.
