Tom Beesley, a co-director of the TRTU, is a respected figure nationally in radio and television and has been chairman of the Broadcast Journalism Training Council for the past 15 years.

The Council is a registered charity whose membership includes the Commercial Radio Companies Association, ITN, the BBC, Sky News, Channel 4 and Skillset, the industry training body for broadcasting.

After beginning his career as a daily newspaper journalist, Tom joined the BBC as East Midlands Television Reporter in 1967. Three years later he moved to radio and throughout the 1970s played a leading role in the development of the local radio network. He was Manager of BBC Radio Nottingham for seven years before being appointed to the newly created post of Senior Manager with oversight of 15 stations in the north of England and Midlands.

In 1982 he became Midlands Regional Television Manager and four years later left the BBC to establish his own company producing video and audio programmes and media awareness training courses for corporate clients. He was contracted as a development consultant to several major newspaper groups.

In conjunction with co-director David Waine, he was responsible in the late 1990s for developing and managing successful licence applications for four new commercial radio stations in the South of England, the Midlands and the North?west.
